Video QnA

Q: If I don’t want to use iTunes, how can I transfer music?

A: There are a few options. SharePod and MediaMonkey are the two most popular.

Q: I lost my charging cable. Can I get another one?

A: Have no fear, Tech Daddy is here. I actually walked into a Micro Center and picked up a 30-pin USB cable for $19 yesterday. They are still around and you can still get them. There are some on Amazon. You can save money by buying third-party, but I only buy first-party cables unless they’re the Anker silicone ones. Those are my favorite.

Q: Can I just add a 4TB SSD in there?

A: Keep in mind that we’re dealing with 10 to 20-year-old technology and there are a lot of other things that dictate how much storage a device can use and access. From what I’ve seen, different models have different theoretical and proven max sizes for storage.

Q: Don’t you need iTunes to sync music?

A: If you were to use the iPod as is, yes. However, most people are flashing custom firmware called Rockbox, which not only adds a lot of features, it lets you drag and drop music files to the iPod like it was a flash drive. Flashing the firmware means installing different software on the iPod. Funny enough, I plugged my girlfriend’s iPod into my M1 Mac Mini. It was recognized immediately.

Q: My headphone jack is broken. Can I still use it?

A: You can either replace the headphone jack or I’ve seen 30-pin to 3.5mm TRS cables on Amazon. Can’t say how they work — if they work — but they are there.
